Paid time off
Employees have legal rights to paid time off work for:
- ante-natal care
- accompanying someone to a disciplinary or grievance hearing
- acting as a member of a European Works Council
- certain duties and training as an official of an independent trade union
- acting as a safety representative, or as an elected employee rep where there is no union representation
- looking for work or retraining while under notice of redundancy (subject to qualifying service)
- consultation with employers on redundancies and business transfers as part of their duties as a union-appointed or employee-elected representative
- duties and training as an employee pension scheme trustee
Unpaid time off
Employees have legal rights to unpaid time off work for:
- sitting as a magistrate
- jury service
- work as a governor of a school or college
- work as member of:
- a local authority
- a statutory tribunal
- a Scottish water and sewerage authority or a water industry consultative committee
- a board of visitors for the prison service
- a police authority
- an NHS trust, regional area health authority or health board
- the Service Authority for the National Criminal Intelligence Service or National Crime Squad
- the Environment Agency of the Scottish Environment Protection Agency
- the General Teaching Council for England and Wales
- certain activities as a member of a recognised independent trade union
- parental leave
- to deal with an emergency situation involving a dependant
