Graduate starting salaries are predicted to rise this year after an unprecedented period of stagnation, according to the Graduate Recruitment Winter Survey 2012 from the Association of Graduate Recruiters.
The average starting salary for a graduate is predicted to increase by 4% to £26,000 this year. It had remained at £25,000 since 2009. Between 2006 and 2008, salaries increased by an average of 2% a year. This predicted rise is the largest since 2005, when starting salaries increased by 7%. The highest increase in salary for 2011-12 is expected amongst FMCG companies with a 4.9% increase followed by engineering or industrial companies at 4.2%. The only sector predicting a decrease in salaries is the construction company or consultancy sector at 1.1%.
The mean marketing spend for AGR employers in 2010-2011 was £37,250. A small decrease in marketing spend is predicted for the 2011-12 recruitment season with a mean spend of £37,000. The mean marketing spend per vacancy in 2010-11 was £1,248; this is also set to decrease in 2011-12 to £994.
The survey also explores recruitment marketing activities and found that nearly all recruiters (96%) are planning to use on-line promotions, such as social media, job boards and company websites, to target students. Despite this, the vast majority (89%) are still planning to visit universities and be on campus.
