Summary
- An 18-week period of maternity leave will be reserved exclusively for mothers, to be taken in a continuous block around the time of birth.
- The current maternity pay and allowance arrangements would be retained during this period.
- The remainder of leave beyond this 18-week period (34 weeks) will be reclassified as ‘flexible parental leave’ and will be available to either parent (adopter and same-sex couples) on an equal basis which they could take concurrently.
