Overview

This case concerned two separate groups of female staff whose jobs were rated as equivalent to various jobs carried out by mostly male staff. When the job evaluation led to the downgrading of the mainly male jobs, the employers introduced pay protection schemes (commonly called ‘red circling’) whereby the men’s pay arrangements were maintained for a certain length of time to give them time to adjust to their lower rate of pay.
