Summary

  • The specific public sector equality duties are designed to help public authorities better perform the general public sector equality duty (contained in the Equality Act 2010) which has been in force since 5 April 2011.
  • The general public sector equality duty requires public bodies (and other organisations exercising public functions) to have due regard to the need to:
    • eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation
    • advance equality of opportunity between those who share a relevant protected characteristic and those who don't, and
    • foster good relations between those who share a relevant protected characteristic and those who don't
